OHIO
Reaction in Ohio fell along political party lines as the U.S. House on Thursday passed a package of spending and tax cuts in congressional legislation, which was signed by President Trump on July 4. (For national coverage, more about the bill is here via FactsHQ).
WHAT SOME OHIO ELECTED OFFICIALS ARE SAYING:
“Northern Ohioans work hard to provide for their families, that’s why today I voted to ensure they receive the real tax relief they deserve through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. This bill prioritizes American energy dominance, promotes economic growth, supports families, seniors, and small businesses, strengthens our border security. Most importantly, it puts America first, including our farmers who deserve the ability to grow their operations and access more flexible, lower-cost loans..."
-- U.S. Rep. Bob Latta, R-Bowling Green, who represents Willard, New London and Huron County
"I want to congratulate @POTUS, Senators @berniemoreno and @SenJonHusted, and Ohio’s Congressional delegation for today extending the 2017 tax cuts. This bill will increase the child tax credit to $2200 and give the average Ohio family a $2100 tax break. These important tax policies are good for Ohio’s working-class families."
-- Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, referring to President Trump and Ohio’s U.S. Senators, Bernie Moreno and Jon Husted
"One Big Beautiful Bill. Passed. It’s a big win for America. Thank you President Trump for your leadership!"
-- U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Urbana, who represents Shelby in the U.S. House
“This bill is callously cruel — an immoral transfer of wealth from the working class to the ultra-rich. It strips health care from 17 Million Americans, kills Millions of good-paying jobs, and adds Trillions to the national debt, all while handing tax breaks to Billionaires. I came to Washington to fight for Northwest Ohio — not to rubber-stamp the destruction of our hospitals, energy jobs, and food assistance."
-- U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Toledo
"I am disheartened that Republicans' dangerous budget bill has now passed in Congress. The harms of this bill on Americans cannot be overstated. Despite today’s outcome, House Democrats will continue to fight for the people, not the powerful."
-- U.S. Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Columbus
"My constituents have feared this day for months. Now they will be living with the consequences. I fought this bill every step of the way, and there is no way I am backing down now. I will keep fighting to reverse these cruel cuts until every Northeast Ohioan can see a doctor when they are sick and feed their family when they are hungry."
-- U.S. Rep. Shontel Brown, D-Cleveland
