Pit bull attacks dog in New London
A loose pit bull attacked a neighbor’s pet in New London, prompting police to cite the owner of the loose animal, village police reported Friday.
The neighbor contacted New London police at 8:33 p.m. on April 24.
Records obtained through a public records request show a fast-moving chain of events.
A New London police officer received a phone call regarding a pit bull running at large in the roadway and had chased down the caller while growling at him, the records provided on Friday show. The caller stated he observed the pit bull running down West Washburn Street.
A second officer arrived on the scene and located the pit bull running down Clinton Street.
The owner later was able to grab its collar and started to walk it back towards her residence but the pit bull ran loose again, police records show.
A police officer later "heard a group of people screaming on Clinton Street for somebody to shoot the dog," an initial report provided by police shows. While running, the officer later saw that a male was trying to pull the pit bull off his dog and was calling for help, records show.
The pit bull eventually returned to its residence where the first officer "observed the dog inside growling" near a juvenile, the report shows.
The pit bull was captured and turned over to the dog warden's office. The dog's owner was cited for dog at large and failing to file an annual dog license, police said.
The dog that was attacked sustained lacerations to the front right paw, a police dispatch narrative shows. Its owner was advised to take it to a veterinarian. The breed of the injured dog is not specified.
